FAQ
Bark Belt Questions
Is the Bark Belt crash tested?
Yes, the Bark Belt is crash tested! Please follow this link to learn all about crash testing and the Bark Belt standards. Linked here.
For secondary testing, the Bark Belt is strength tested by our manufacturer with forces similar to those used in human seat belt testing.
How does the Bark Belt protect my dog?
A Bark Belt is designed for everyday driving. It helps keep your dog from roaming the car, reduces distraction, and slows their forward movement during sudden stops or low-speed accidents — the types of situations most dog parents encounter.
The Bark Belt uses the same style of locking mechanism found in human seat belts. When the vehicle decelerates quickly, the mechanism engages, helping control your dog’s motion and reducing the chance of them being thrown forward.
When paired with a sturdy, crash-tested harness, the Bark Belt helps support safer, more predictable positioning in the car for both your dog and the people inside the vehicle.
What is the maximum length of the Bark Belt?
We have two sizes for Bark Belts; Medium and Large
Medium = 32" or about 81cm
Large = 40" or about 102cm
Does my dog have to wear a harness with the Bark Belt?
YES. The Bark Belt must be attached to the back side of a dog harness. Please do not attach the bark belt to any other area of the harness besides the back.
What kind of harness should I use with the Bark Belt?
Bark Belt is developing their own crash tested harness, that should be announced soon. In the meantime, we recommend using a crash tested harness that functions with a single carabiner attachment point. Please do not use a harness that relies on multiple attachment points.
What should I keep in mind when using the Bark Belt?
The Bark Belt gives dogs room to move and get comfortable, but that also means they are not fully confined in a rigid space. In an accident, that movement can result in contact with other surfaces or passengers.
Your harness choice is important. The Bark Belt anchors the dog, but the harness determines how the forces are distributed. Always use a strong, crash-tested harness with a single-point attachment—not a collar.
Dogs, like humans, can experience motion-related injuries such as whiplash in sudden stops. A Bark Belt helps control forward movement, but it cannot eliminate all motion-based risks.
Will the Bark Belt work with my vehicle?
We cannot guarantee the Bark Belt will work with all car models, but the two systems we have in place are compatible with most vehicles. If you purchase the Bark Belt and it does not work with your vehicle, please contact us for a refund and to see if we can make a special order.
Which states have laws against driving with an unrestrained dog?
Within the past few years, many states have begun to pass laws against driving with an unrestrained dog in your car. Here is a website that tracks the states that currently have laws in place (scroll to the bottom).
An unrestrained dog can be highly distracting for a car driver. According to a study by AAA, up to 30% of dog parents have reported being distracted by their dog while driving. In some cases your insurance company might even void your claim if your dog is unrestrained.
What if my dog does not like harnesses?
We recommend starting positive reinforcement training with your dog ASAP. Specifically this training should be centered around getting your dog comfortable with their harness and wearing it. Here is a video we recommend to help with this training
How does the Bark Belt’s design compare to CPS standards?
CPS does not believe dogs should be allowed "freedom of movement" in a car. For this reason, they do not test or certify tether-style restraints. Their program is built around containment, meaning the dog is kept in one fixed position to prevent them from impacting human passengers. When we reached out about certifying the Bark Belt, CPS explained that products allowing "freedom of movement" fall outside their testing model.
Bark Belt began with a different philosophy in mind. Many dogs and dog parents prefer a small amount of freedom of movement. Car rides can be a dog's favorite activity. Full containment systems can be impractical for some families or not compatible with how their dog enjoys the car. Many dogs settle best when they have a little room to move, and not every dog tolerates being confined in a rigid crate or held in one static position.
We believe safety and comfort should work together. The Bark Belt allows controlled freedom of movement so dogs can sit, shift, and settle naturally while still helping manage the everyday risks.
